Vape Maintenance Guide: Coils, Cleaning and Battery Safety

That first puff from a fresh coil? Smooth, rich and exactly how the bottle promised. Two weeks later, it's a different story. Harsh. Muted. Maybe a little burnt. Your taste buds aren't the problem. Your kit just needs some attention. With a simple vape maintenance routine, you can keep that flavour fresher for longer. Here's how.

Just one thing first: check your device's manual. Charging, compatible coils and cleaning steps vary between kits.

When should you change your vape coil?

The coil heats your e-liquid, so it's usually one of the first parts to wear out.

Signs Your Coil is Finished

  • A burnt or harsh taste, even with plenty of liquid
  • Flavour that's gone flat
  • Gurgling, spitting or leaking
  • Less vapour than usual

There's no fixed lifespan. A coil might last a few days or even weeks. Heavy use, high wattage and very sweet liquids all wear it out faster. When yours is done, swap in fresh coils or replacement pods.

How to Prime a New Coil

Dry cotton scorches in seconds and once it burns, there's no going back. So prime every new coil first:

  1. Drip a few drops of e-liquid onto the exposed cotton and into the top of the coil.
  2. Fit the coil, then fill your tank or pod.
  3. Wait 5-10 minutes so the wick soaks through.
  4. If your kit has adjustable power, start at the low end of the coil's range and build up slowly.

Make coils last longer

  • Top up before the liquid drops below the wick holes.
  • Leave a few seconds between puffs. Chain vaping dries the wick.
  • Stay within the wattage range printed on the coil.
  • Match your liquid to your kit. As a general guide, 50/50 liquids and nic salts are commonly used in lower-power MTL pod kits, while thicker 70/30 shortfills generally suit higher-power, more open devices. Always check the recommended liquid for your coil.

Your regular vape maintenance routine

Good device upkeep only takes a few minutes.

Task How often Why it helps
Wipe the mouthpiece and pod contacts Every few days Removes condensation and keeps a good connection
Rinse the tank or refillable pod At every coil or flavour change Clears residue and old flavour
Check seals and O-rings At every coil change Damaged seals can cause leaks

How to clean a tank or compatible refillable pod

  1. Remove the coil and empty any liquid.
  2. Rinse the tank or pod in warm water. Skip boiling water, as it can warp plastic.
  3. Let everything air-dry fully. Overnight is ideal. Any water left inside can contribute to gurgling.
  4. Fit a new, primed coil and refill.

If your pod has built-in electronics, follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions instead. Never rinse the battery section. Use a dry cotton bud to gently clean the contacts.

Which battery safety habits matter most?

Rechargeable vapes use lithium-ion batteries, like your phone. Use and charge yours correctly, and you'll reduce the risk of battery problems.

  • Use the recommended charger. Choose the charger and cable specified by the manufacturer. If you need a replacement, buy from the original brand or a reputable retailer.
  • Unplug when it's full. It's a key message in the government's vape safety campaign.
  • Never charge overnight or while you're out.
  • Charge where you can see it. Use a clean, flat surface. Never charge under a pillow, blanket or anything that could trap heat.
  • Avoid extreme heat and cold.
  • Keep loose batteries away from keys and coins. Metal objects can cause a short circuit.
  • Stop using damaged devices. If yours is wet, leaking, swollen or otherwise damaged, stop using and charging it.

If a Battery Swells or Overheats

Unusually hot, swollen, leaking or damaged? Stop using and charging it. Don't puncture, crush, open or tamper with it. If there's a fire, don't try to tackle it yourself. Get away from the device, leave the area and call 999.

FAQs

Can you clean coils instead of replacing them?

Not effectively. A rinse may shift some residue, but it won't save a scorched wick. If a coil tastes burnt or has clearly worn out, replace it.

Why does my vape leak?

Usually it's overfilling, a worn seal, a cracked pod or a badly fitted coil. Condensation can look like a leak too. So can liquid that doesn't suit your device.

How to Recycling an old kit?

Never put a vape in the bin or your household recycling. A crushed battery can spark a fire in a bin lorry or depot. Take it to a vape or electrical recycling point, a participating vape shop or your local household waste recycling centre instead.
