The Early Origins of Vaping in the 1960s
The first concept of smokeless, non-tobacco cigarettes appeared in 1963, when Herbert A. Gilbert filed a patent for a smokeless, non-tobacco cigarette design. He envisioned a battery-powered device that produced heated, flavoured air to create vapour rather than burning tobacco and paper. Herbert experimented with flavoured water that turned into steam, but unfortunately, a fire destroyed much of his work related to this invention. However, his vision laid the foundation for modern e-cigarettes.
The Modern Invention in the 2000s by Hon Lik
Vaping first became a thing in the early 2000s, when Hon Lik developed a vape-like device after losing his father due to lung cancer. He wanted to create a more effective alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes. To eliminate combustion and smoke, he invented a device that used battery-powered heating technology to vapourise a nicotine solution rather than burning tobacco.
Hon Lik used a rechargeable lithium-ion battery to power an ultrasonic atomiser (now called a heating coil) that turned a nicotine liquid held within it into inhalable vapour. His design became the first commercially successful vape device and paved the way for the modern e-cigarettes we know today.
When Did Vaping Start In The UK?
By the mid-2000s, e-cigarettes had started to show up in the UK market shortly after e-cigs gained popularity in China.
2007-2010: Early devices, known as cigalikes, were introduced in 2007 and sold through specialist retailers and online vape shops. These devices were designed to look and feel like traditional cigarettes, complete with a glowing LED tip that mimicked a lit cigarette. Although they introduced many smokers to vaping, their battery performance was generally poor, and many devices struggled with inconsistent vapour production.
When Did Vaping Become Popular: The Evolution of Vaping in the UK
As technology improved, new vaping devices entered the market, making vaping more accessible and appealing.
Early 2010s: Vape pens were introduced to the market with larger batteries and refillable tanks. This allowed users not only to replace the heating coil but also to choose their own e-liquids. Vape pens are still a popular form of vape device. Many of these devices from that era are now considered starter vape kits.
The Mid-2010s: Vaping grew in popularity across the UKin the mid-2010s. Sub-ohm vaping emerged with powerful advanced vaping devices during that period. Box mods with high-capacity batteries and adjustable wattage were introduced, allowing users to customize settings to produce larger clouds and more decadent flavours. Innokin, SMOK, and Aspire were among the most notable brands during the mid-2010s
Late 2010s–Present: The recent evolution in the late 2010s saw the rise of sleek devices powered by modern technology. The intention of nic salts allowed for a smooth vaping experience without the harshness of e-liquids. This innovation led to the rise of pod kits due to their user-friendly design, simplicity, and portability. Today, refillable pod kits and prefilled pod kits have become the go-to choice for many vapers, offering a balance of convenience, reliability, and ease of use.
